Addresses don’t come much grander than ‘Number One London’, the popular name for Apsley House, one of the most interesting visitor attractions in London. Home to the Duke of Wellington after his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo, the interior of the house has changed very little since the days of the Iron Duke. It boasts one of the finest art collections in London, with paintings by Velazquez and Rubens as well as a wonderful collection of silver and porcelain. Pride of place goes to a massive nude statue of Napoleon.

12:30 Transfer by coach to Old Spitalfields.

Spitalfields Market is one of London’s finest Victorian market halls. Set in an historic location in the heart of the City and one of the crown jewels of East London. Firmly established as the ‘must visit’ London attraction for Londoners and tourists alike, Old Spitalfields market offers a fusion of Victorian splendour and contemporary architecture, overshadowed by Christchurch Spitalsfields, a rare masterpiece by Hawksmore. The market  brings together some of the Capital’s finest restaurants, shops and an array of themed stall market days.

Stroll through the 18th century backstreets and relive the time when London was the largest city in the world with perhaps the world’s most diverse population.

Stowe House is a Grade I listed country house located in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England. Built in the grand style by an earlier Duke of Buckingham as a private residence,  it is now the home of Stowe School, an independent school. The gardens (known as Stowe Landscape Gardens), a significant example of the English Landscape Garden style, along with part of the Park, passed into the ownership of The National Trust in 1989.
The scale, grandeur and beauty of the gardens has inspired writers, philosophers, artists, politicians and members of the public from the 18th century to the present day.

13:00 Lunch at the Boat Inn, an atmospheric pub located on the Grand Union Canal. (lunch not included in the price)

Visit the nearby Waterways Museum. Housed in a restored cornmill in the picturesque village of Stoke Bruerne, the museum collection vividly portrays the heritage of 200 years of inland waterways. This fascinating and colourful insight into a transport system, fundamental to the industrial revolution in Britain, is complemented by the “living canal” outside with its flight of locks, boats and the Blisworth Tunnel, the longest canal tunnel in the UK.

Explore the mysteries of this intriguing part of our heritage through working models, videos, pictorial and three dimensional displays portraying every aspect of the waterways.

From amazing feats of engineering to the shining brass and colourful decoration that contrasts so sharply with the harsh reality of canal life, you will find something of interest.
